Bbm Deion Talks “SHINE”, His Creative Process, & More

modrNation: Where are you originally from?

BBM Deion: I’m originally from Lubbock Texas, that’s where I’ve been most of my life but I was born in Cloves, New Mexico.

modrNation: How has growing up there influenced you to begin making music?

BBM Deion: The Texas scene is big on music in general, but where I’m from has a very little hip hop scene. Growing up I eventually got into music as a way to express myself and my energy, and my family always loved music as well.

modrNation: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

BBM Deion: I get a lot of Roddy Rich comparisons, but I’ve never wanted to be like anyone else. I've always just tried to tap into my own sound. People have the misconception that if you're in the same genre as someone else then you sound the same, but that’s really not the case. That melodic sound Roddy Rich has been building is inspiring to me, but I’ve been working to put my own twist on that.

modrNation: How do you feel coming up at such a young age has affected the way you navigate the music industry and work to achieve your goals?

BBM Deion: I’ve really focused on building my team, being young I have the advantage of time and gaining experience. I’m really just focused on laying the foundation and grinding while I’m still in my youth.

modrNation: With your dad being your engineer and DJ, what’s the workflow like between the two of you and did that creative relationship come about naturally?

BBM Deion: It came naturally, my dad generally loves what he does, we both love what we do. The work flow is crazy, as soon as I’m done recording a song he’s already working on the mix. We’re both growing together and learning at the same time so eventually it’ll just be unstoppable.

modrNation: You’re getting ready to release your project “SHINE”, what was the creative process behind that?

BBM Deion: Generally when I’m recording I try to just feel the vibes. When I was making that project I was feeling high energy and we wanted to go for that summer vibe. We called it “SHINE” because we wanted people to shine in their best light when they’re listening to it and be able to capture that summer vibe.

modrNation: What inspired this project?

BBM Deion: Just that summer vibe, I just really wanted to release something that people can have fun with because I had fun making the songs.

modrNation: What’s the intention behind your music?

BBM Deion: My intention is to create something that people can vibe to, but the only music I make is music that I enjoy. I hope people can gravitate towards the music, but I just want to tell my story and hope that people can relate and get inspired. Sometimes I tell stories from my perspectives and sometimes I’ll tell it from others, I feel like everyone can find a song they enjoy from me.

modrNation: What would you say is the importance of finding your own identity and breaking barriers as an artist?

BBM Deion: It’s really important, in order to break into the industry you have to have your own story and your own vibe. A lot of artists do the same thing, so you need to find a way to stand out. I like to think about it as finding the one thing that sets you apart because you can really run with that one unique thing. Your personality and a good sound can take you far, if you can find a captivating way to tell your story then you’ve got it made.

modrNation: What do you feel is the story you’re trying to tell?

BBM Deion: I just want to speak to people to the younger audience because what I say in my music they can relate to. I’m an artist in high school, so I just want to show that even in high school you can be yourself and still flourish.

modrNation: With support coming from SoundCloud, Spotify, Audiomack, and more, what are some of your goals and plans moving forward for the second half of this year?

BBM Deion: First of all I just want to thank each and every one of those platforms, they’ve been showing love and it makes a huge difference. It’s been a blessing to work with them. The goal is to grow on every platform and keep the consistency going while still being myself.

modrNation: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

BBM Deion: Number one, that’s really all I can say.
