Save Ferris - “Suburbia”
“Suburbia’, the sway-heavy, lofi romanticization of a relationship juxtaposed with sombering realizations about oneself, is a beautifully orchestrated track that revels in melancholy. Save Ferris studies mood and feeling on ‘Suburbia”, mixing in jazzy piano, simple drums, and the defeatist attitude of many people living in the gray, boring, and slightly nihilistic suburbs of the U.S.. All the while, he takes an individualist stance on life as he “drowns in [his] thoughts” as the only one to notice, downs a 40 alone, and covers up true emotions.
The simple drums and piano sample tighten up Ferris’ laid back, almost drunken flow which reaches through the headphones with a heavily textured mix. The consistent loop of each instrument gives the song a sense of consistency and maturity. Ultimately, they serve as a reflection that while disappointments continue to assail one in growth, life keeps moving.
Ferris’ theme, that individuality is quite sobering and lonely, is reaffirmed by the opening sample. “We’ll develop a community, it’s a thing that’s totally lacking in American society as we know it” is the first statement on Suburbia, and aptly wraps Ferris’ many insights into one tight and tactful bow on the track. Between his musical understandings, and modern lyrical style, Save Ferris describes youth in nihilism as well as anyone can on “Suburbia.”
